Studio Poise: Week 4

Disclaimer: I was given a month of unlimited classes in exchange for my honest review. This is not a sponsored post.

If you missed weeks one, two, and three at Studio Poise, feel free to check those out first, this post is about my 4th and final week and I will have an after thoughts post up later this week as well.

I left off with last Wednesday, so I have a little bit more than a week to catch you up on.

That Friday, I once again took Pound Fit with Emily. Honestly, I really love starting my Friday’s with this class, the music and sequences are hard enough, and sometimes I feel a little bit like a dancer/badass.

On Saturday morning I finally took Poise Power Flow Xpress with Melissa. This class is at 7 am, and many times it gets cancelled since less than 3 people sign up, finally I was able to get into a class and I am so glad I did. I have never actually taken yoga before so I was a bit apprehensive, but due to the nature of the class size, Melissa was able to correct our poses and help me understand what my body should be doing.

Melissa also noticed that I have hyperextended knees, basically my knee goes past the point where most knees “lock” and becomes almost inverted. I’ve always been like that and after some research I read that yoga can actually assist with this. Anyway, Melissa was able to give me pointers for each movement that wouldn’t cause my knees to actually hyperextend. I really appreciated that extra effort and care.

zumba

I followed yoga up with Zumba, probably not the best back-to-back sequence, but I really wanted to take both classes, and I don’t regret it.

Sunday, I was signed up for Piloxing, but Emily was subbing so it ended up being a very small Pound Fit class instead, and you all know how much I love pound, so I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest.

Last Wednesday I finally made it to a Piloxing class. I will be honest, I was having a real shitty morning (how that’s possible at 6 am is beyond me) and I went into class in an awful mood. When I am in that kind of mood the last thing I want to do is pretend I am happy, and throughout the class I was frustrated. I was frustrated when I couldn’t get a sequence of movements or when I wasn’t doing something correctly. I felt like I was the only person who hadn’t taken a class before, and even though the class was smallish, I felt lile I didn’t understand anything Diana was saying. Frankly, I think 99% of it was my mood, I am definitely willing to give this class another try on my own dime, but I hope I am in a better mood.

Friday, was Pound Fit again, I know you are all surprised. I will spare you any review, but I will say that Emily introduced a few new songs/sequences, and I loved them.

Saturday was my last day in my unlimited month of classes. I took Zumba and Poise Xpress with Christina. For some reason I though Zumba started at 8:15 (probably because most of the weekday classes start at 6:15) so I ended up there a bit late, but I just jumped in the back and followed along.

Poise I ended up adding last-minute since there was room and I missed part of Zumba. Both classes were wonderful and I can see that there has been a decent amount of improvement from my first class to this class. While, I am nowhere near as great as some of the ladies that take this class, I am very impressed in my improvement.

How do you handle a class when you are in a foul mood?

Studio Poise: Week Two and BAMR Review

Disclaimer: I was given an month of unlimited classes in exchange for my honest review. This is not a sponsored post.

I hope that we are waking up to a World Series win in Boston today, because I obviously want them to win, but also I want to enjoy Trick or Treating with the B man tonight! Are you doing anything fun tonight?

Make sure you check out my first week at Studio Poise if you haven’t yet.

Friday I was able to get off the waiting list and into the very popular POUND Fit taught by Emily. Since I was the only person who hadn’t taken it before, she quickly taught me the moves and body positions that would be happening in class and how to hold the ripstix correctly.

I am so glad that I was able to get into this class. The 45 minutes flew by so fast, and it was so much fun. Honestly, I don’t think I have had more fun at 6 am. I have always loved working out in the morning, but this literally felt like a party, and then the soreness snuck up on me later that day.

Saturday, I decided to do something that I have never done. Take back-to-back classes. I started with Poise Xpress followed by Arms & Abs, both taught by Danielle. This was definitely not just a test of physical toughness, but more of a test on my mental toughness. It was hard to not think “ooh this is tough and I have another class I am going to give myself a 30 second break” or “I just took another class I am going to give myself a break”. I won’t lie, I have had to take breaks almost every class, these work outs are just a completely new animal to my body and it just takes time to feel comfortable with pushing your body past certain obstacles.

That being said, both class were fantastic, I was feeling exhausted and my arms, abs and legs felt like they needed rest, that is a success in my book. Danielle is also great at letting you know when one exercise will be ending soon. I really like this because I can tell myself, you can do this for 8 more counts. She also has high energy and is always smiling. I know that any class I have with her, I will leave happy and exhausted. I also enjoyed these two classes because neither of them were packed and it gave the students space to spread out and for newbies like me to get up front.

Sunday I took barreworke with Christina. It was my first completely barre class. It was a small class and Christina asked at the beginning if anyone was new. There were two of us, so she announced modifications and made sure to check our form and call out tips that would help us get a better workout and help us have better form. I have always had really bad turnout (just like Jody Sawyer…I hope at least one of you got that movie reference) and while I love all the ballet aspects, this is definitely why I stopped doing it, and it is still a struggle, but I loved barreworke because of how similar to ballet it is.

Tuesday, I took Poise Xpress with Emily (like last week) but I was having a hard time, my body didn’t feel like it was cooperating, my legs were sore and my hips were tight and more than once I wanted to just get up and leave. Emily gave me some guidance on body placement and that helped. I am glad I stuck with it and didn’t walk out. While every workout isn’t easy and amazing, the instructors definitely help pull me through the tough spots.

Yesterday (Wednesday) I took Piloxing Xpress with Diana. Unfortunately there was an issue with keys, no ones fault, and we had to wait for Danielle to come unlock the doors with her keys and class started late. We got about 25 minutes of a very fast paced class. I definitely feel like I got a great workout, I was sweating when I left, but I definitely want to take a full class before I can give you a complete view. Diana and Danielle were very apologetic and were very accommodating since we all had to still leave on time.

This week, I also got a chance to test out my new socks (review to come later) and I took my BAMR headband through another week of classes. I received this headband from Katie and I was immediately in love with the print!

I first wore it to Zooma because I was on a workout break

IMG_0400-300x225

Then I wore it to classes at Achieve, if you are not familiar those classes are mostly strength and cardio,  and classes at Studio Poise. At Achieve it stayed put, I didn’t have to fix it or adjust it at any point. At Studio Poise I did have to adjust it a few times or take it off (but I tried my other headbands and had the exact same problems) for the remainder of class. I attribute this mostly to the fact that we spend more time on the floor and I have a tendency to let my head rest on the mat.

Katie has a ton of great color options, you can see a lot of them on the BAMR site or Facebookinstagram, and twitter, and is very responsive to questions! My only issue and I think I might be alone in this, is that because my hair is so freaking thick (I know, I know) most headbands give me a headache if I wear them for too long. For this reason, I like headbands that I am able to move around if needed. The BAMR headbands are very tight to my head and don’t allow me to do that, maybe I need a special size for my big ol’ head?

Edited to add: Katie does indeed make special request headbands, please see her comment below. This gal, has the BEST customer service!

With every portion a donation is made to Every Mother Counts! Make sure you check her out and let me know what you think!
