Bouncing Back From Bed Rest

When I announced my pregnancy I also briefly talked about my modified bed rest. In case you missed it, I was diagnosed with a bleed on the gestational sac, which meant zero exercise. I was recently cleared to exercise, but I was incredibly nervous to jump right back into a studio class.

I was only cleared to do low impact exercises. Things like running, intense lifting, HIIT training were banned. I was also banned from spinning since I have only done it once and we are just being cautious. This means I can participate in classes like barre, yoga, pilates and any sort of stretching type of class and I can do as much walking as I would like.

I don’t feel like I am really limited, to be 100% honest, I probably wouldn’t have participated in running that much. I don’t typically run in the winter, and I wouldn’t want to risk a big fall, but also the bigger reason is fear. I know that running did not cause my miscarriage, but the fear is there, and I am not ashamed to admit it. I also really had been enjoying my studio classes pre-pregnancy, and I was excited to return.

So how did I return to working out? I knew I needed to take it easy and slowly get back into a routine. I become exhausted pretty easily, and I knew my muscles would be sore the first few weeks getting back into it. The two weeks I just did shorter yoga videos at home. I know that I don’t always push myself as much as I should when I am working out at home, so I was able to really keep the effort low and slowly increase it. I also only did 3 workouts a week, which was a huge decrease from the 6 weekly workouts I was doing pre-pregnancy.

Pure Barre Lynnfield

I finally went back into a studio class, and of course I had to start at Pure Barre. It helped that the class was a donation based class to support Jane who is running the Boston Marathon, for Team BIDMC again, this year! {Donate Here}

The studio emailed me the pregnancy modifications during the week, and I literally studied them. I wanted to make sure I knew what to do, because I knew that my first class would be overwhelming and I didn’t want to forget anything. I also told Cara, the teacher, that I was pregnant and that if I was doing something wrong to just let me know.

The class went well and I was shaking and burning right away, 3 months away was incredibly humbling, movements that were second nature to me when I was last in a class are now foreign to me. It is so crazy how much muscle memory I lost in a seemingly short time.

Of course the plan was to get into the studio 2-3 times a week and to do an at home workout 1-2 times a week, starting with this week. I was incredibly sore after my first class on Sunday, and had plans to go back on Wednesday, but of course #Blizzard2015 has had other plans for me. I can’t even exchange that workout for shoveling, per doctors orders, so I have been trying to get some shorter workouts in via video.

Have you ever been on bed rest? How did you bounce back?

Weekly Updates: 08/11/14 – 08/17/14 (Zooma Week 2)

weeklyworkouts.jpg

Monday, August 11th – Cross Training. Since my car was still out of commission I exchanged Monday and Tuesday’s schedule. I did 35 minutes up and down the hill on my street. It was hard, but it’ll be worth it.

Tuesday, August 12th – 35 minutes. I did this workout on Monday, so I went to Pure Barre first thing in the morning!

Pure Barre Lynnfield

Wednesday, August 13 – Cross Training. I took another Pure Barre class. 55 minutes of pure fun!

Thursday, August 14 – 35 minutes. B and I went for our early morning jaunt. It was more of a slow jog/walk then a run, but I am just focusing on getting the minutes & miles in, more than anything.

Friday, August 15 – 3.5 miles. B and I did 2 miles, I was feeling sick the night before so we got a late start and I wanted to make it home for nap time. He didn’t end up taking a nap, so we spent some time running around outside.

Can you spot me? {Photo Credit: PBL Facebook}

In the evening I went to Pure Barre Lynnfield’s first intensive class, the theme was Slenderize Your Outer Thighs, instead of 55 minutes it was 75 minutes. I think every single one of us was incredibly scared. It was an intense class, I was dripping within 20 minutes of the start, but it wasn’t something that I couldn’t handle. Melissa, the instructor, really focused on making sure that our form was perfect, that our heels were high enough, our shoulders relaxed, etc… It was a great class and I can’t wait to take the next one.

Saturday,  August 16 – REST. I sort of did this. If you follow me on Instagram I am sure you saw the pictures I posted from the Keith Urban concert. We went with my sister-in-law and her husband to the show in CT. We had pit which is general admission so we got there as soon as we could and stood for a good 6 hours. My legs were pretty beat after the Pure Barre class on Friday so this wasn’t the best idea, but I don’t regret it one bit.

Sunday, August 17 – 55 minutes. This did not happen. When I woke up my legs were shot, plus I knew I’d have to drive back to Boston. I made the executive decision that rest was what was more important. I also soaked my lower legs in the freezing cold pool in hopes that it would speed up the recovery process.

Food: This week was a lot of quality veggies and lean proteins. The only exception being Thursday evening, I was feeling so gross and the only thing that sounded good was grilled cheese, but we didn’t have any bread in the house. I made a small bowl of pasta instead, it made feel a bit bloated, but it didn’t make me feel like throwing up so that’s a win. Saturday after the concert we were starving so we ended up at the local diner, we all ordered club sandwiches. I only ate half of mine and it definitely filled me up.

How is your training going? Have you ever taken a Pure Barre intensive?

Weekly Updates: 08/04/14 – 08/10/14 (Zooma Week 1)

I wrote this post before the tragic passing of Robin Williams. I know that some people feel like mourning celebrity deaths is ridiculous, and sometimes I feel that way too. When Paul Walker passed I read this article that explained so well why we feel more when certain celebrities pass away.

genie-im-gonna-miss-you-robin-williams

I feel like I grew up with Robin’s works. Mork & Mindy was one of my favorite TV shows as a kid. Dead Poets is what made me want to teach. Good Morning, Vietnam made me want to learn more about history. Hook, Aladdin, Jumanji & Mrs.Doubtfire are engrained in my childhood, and Good Will Hunting is always my  favorite Boston movie, but my favorite movie about life and love. Here is a great article on the life lessons we learned from Robin Williams.

I hope people remember that Depression is a disease, one that this no cure, but that needs constant vigilance and work. If you are feeling like you have no one please call the suicide prevention line (1-800-273-8255) or tell someone. Even in times of darkness you are loved.

So, Zooma training has officially kicked off. I am excited for the training and for the workouts!

Monday, August 4th –  Cross Training per the plan! I ended up using Monday as a rest day since I went to Pure Barre on Saturday and Sunday, and they were both tough workouts!

Tuesday, August 5th - 30 minutes running. I went to Pure Barre in the morning and when I got home I took B on a jog(ish) in town. His stroller is not a running stroller so it is heavy, and ended up walking more than running.

Wednesday, August 6th – Cross training. I took an evening class at Pure Barre with Jane, and we were rewarded with free wine at the end of the day! For my local friends, Pure Barre Lynnfield has $10 Tuesdays for the month of August for new clients, if you have been wanting to try it, this is your chance!

Pure Barre

Thursday, August 7th – 30 minutes running. My car started making wonky noises and we couldn’t get an appointment with the mechanic until Saturday, and he advised us not to drive unless absolutely necessary. So I did 30 minutes of running around outside our house with B.

Friday, August 8th – 3 miles. Same situation as above, and our street (and neighboring ones) don’t have sidewalks so I do not feel comfortable taking B’s large stroller out on the busy streets. We ran up and down our dead-end street for a while, I didn’t check for mileage because that seems silly, but we were out for over 2 hours, so hopefully that counts for something.

Saturday, August 9th – Rest. I knew Sunday would likely be a rest day, so Jane picked me up at home and drove me to Pure Barre. Thankful for awesome friends!

Sunday, August 10th – 45 minutes running. I was outside playing with B for a good chunk of the day, and also running around the house doing a ton of projects, it wasn’t the planned workout, but I think it’ll be okay.

Week 1 Lessons: It is not easy training with a toddler, that is something I don’t have to really explain. Where I run/jog/walk isn’t super populated during the early hours of the morning, at least not at the time that works for us. So until B starts pre-school I am going to have to fit in what I can, when I can. I also, have to keep my pace worries in check. With the stroller and B alone I am pushing about 70 pounds, plush whatever gear, snacks, toys, etc… I bring with us to keep him occupied until we get to the playground.

Food Updates:

This weekend was one of the first weekends this summer that resulted in spontaneous dinner plans. Cait and I had been trying to meet up for a while, and we both happened to be free on Friday night. She picked me up (seriously, I have great friends) and brought us to Legal C Bar at Market Street in Lynnfield.

LegalCBar

We took a couple of seats at the bar and had a great time, great food and conversation will do that for you. I also had a pretty healthy dinner. The combo plate hat scallops, scrimp and a crab cake full of crab not stuffing alongside a light salad.

LegalCBarFood

I still enjoyed the warm bread and some wine, but I still put this dinner in the win column.

Do you run with a stroller? What was the best seafood dish you’ve made or had made for you?

Stitch Fix #3 and #4! June and July 2014

Before I get to my reviews, I would love if you could go LIKE this photo on Instagram, I am in the running to win a month unlimited at my local Pure Barre, I just need the most likes on this photo, any likes are appreciated, and I will make sure to follow you!

I appreciate all of your feedback on my last Stitch Fix post, I ended up not purchasing anything and emailing Stitch Fix about my disappointment. They ended up refunding my $20 styling fee and I emailed back and forth for a few days with a stylist, Jackie, who ended up styling fix #3 and #4.

Stitch Fix

For Stitch Fix #3 I asked for fun and flowy pieces and some options for my 30th birthday.

Andrew Marc Crystal Abstract Print Sheath Dress – $128

Andrew Marc Crystal Abstract Print Sheath Dress

This dress was way too long and boxy on me, I couldn’t even take a picture, I looked like a little kid in her mom’s clothes. Returned

Pomelo Moni Stud Detailed 3/4 Sleeve Blouse – $58

Pomelo Moni Stud Detailed 3/4 Sleeve Blouse

I really loved the sheerness and style of this top, unfortunately, I have broad shoulders like a football player, and the shirt felt like it pulled too much in that area. I would have loved it if it was a tank top and a tad bit cheaper. Returned

Papermoon Andi Ikat Print Maxi Skirt – $58

Papermoon Andi Ikat Print Maxi Skirt

I LOVED this skirt, it was super soft and I loved the print. It was a bit long, but I have a family member that can hem it for me so I won’t have to pay for that. It was pricy, but I have never been able to find a maxi skirt that I love so I purchased it. Purchased

THML Kahlo Racer Back Striped Maxi Dress – $78

THML Kahlo Racer Back Striped Maxi Dress

I loved the color of this dress and the pattern and style, but I hated it when I put it on, it just wasn’t super flattering on me, which was a bummer since it was the perfect length for my 5’1″ frame. Returned

Bay to Baubles Salinas Carved Leaf Drop Earrings – $28

IMG_8603Bay to Baubles Salinas Carved Leaf Drop Earrings

I don’t own a ton of earrings, I loved that these were very lightweight! Purchased

2 Items Purchased – $86 – $20 fee = $66

Stitch Fix #4 - After the 3rd box I updated my Pinterest Style Page and made sure to send the link with my feedback. I asked for legging style or stretchy pants, as they are more conducive for running after a very active toddler. I also asked for flowy tops and statement jewelry.

This one I need a bit of help with, I just got it yesterday, and need to return what I don’t want tomorrow, but I can’t decided!

Tart Eames Geo Print Gathered Waist Knit Shirt – $64

Rune Porter Basic Legging – $38

Rune Porter Basic Legging

Um, awkward hands. I LOVED the leggings, they were thick, comfortable and fit perfectly! And the price is perfect! I am definitely keeping these.

Le Sample Kahlo Embroidered Racerback Tank – $48

Le Sample Kahlo Embroidered Racerback Tank

I loved this tank, it is pretty much the same as the maxi dress above. I loved the blue colors and the design! I am wearing the leggings they sent with this top as well!

Kut From The Kloth Callie Denim Jacket – $78

Kut From The Kloth Callie Denim Jacket

I am on the fence about this jacket. My sister loved it, but it is a bit expensive. I also wanted to show you the back of this tank!

Zad Lisa Beaded Open Shape Bib Necklace – $44

Zad Lisa Beaded Open Shape Bib Necklace

I liked the look of the necklace in the box, but it isn’t as great as I thought it would be. The material seemed sort of dingy and not worth the price tag.

So here is my dilemma, I am for sure getting the leggings and tank, I can’t imagine sending them back. However, if I get the jean jacket it would be only $20 more to purchase everything (with the 25% discount for purchasing everything). What do you think? Jean jacket, yay or nay?

If you want to try Stitch Fix, feel free to use my referral link, I would greatly appreciate it!

• Quote: These are somewhat silly but these quotes have been some of my favorites for years:
“Pain, you just have to ride it out, hope it goes away on its own, hope the wound that caused it heals. There are no solutions, no easy answers, you just breath deep and wait for it to subside. Most of the time pain can be managed but sometimes the pain gets you where you least expect it. Hits way below the belt and doesn’t let up. Pain, you just have to fight through, because the truth is you can’t outrun it and life always makes more. ” Meredith, Greys Anatomy

“It’s good to know that the ones you love will always be in your heart. And if you’re very lucky, only a plane ride away. ” Carrie, Sex and the City

“I will never be the woman with the perfect hair, who can wear white and not spill on it.” Carrie, Sex and the City

• Life Hack: Put newspaper in wet sneakers, the usually dry overnight.

Answer one of the above! Especially if you have a great life hack!

BarreFit App Giveaway

Giveaway is closed, please email me at cupcakekelly21@gmail.com if you have won!

It’s no secret that I love going to any type of Barre classes, I have blogged about them a lot. It is also no secret that they can be expensive and they might not always be local. Nick and I have been working on an app that can help solve that problem, and TEN of you will win a code to download the app for free.

barrefiticonYou can read the press release, but I will give you the details as well.

So what is BarreFit?  It is a workout instructor, timer, and log that is focused around the latest craze in the fitness world, ballet barre.

barrefit1

You pick the workout you want to do and the app will take you through the workout timing each move as well as reporting your progress (including spoken queues, time left, and the current rep). The app also plays music selections that you add to the app. The song only plays for as long as the current rep, so if the rep lasts 30 seconds, it will play the song for only 30 seconds. It’s perfect for me, because I have song ADD when I work out, and I am constantly skipping songs halfway through because I’m bored. There are also videos for most of the workouts, if you are confused on how to do a certain move or if you’ve never taken a barre class before this is a way for you to learn the movements.

barrefitheader

We plan on adding workouts regularly so you won’t get bored with the workout routines that are in the app currently, in fact when I get done writing this blog post, I will be writing up some more workouts to add for you!

You can integrate your workouts with the RunKeeper app. With Apple’s recent announcement of HealthKit we are already working on ways to integrate it, we are really excited for the great things we will be able to do!

Some important info:

  • The app only works with iPhones, iPads and the iPod touch
  • You need to have iOS 7.0 or later
  • 8.4 MB
  • BarreFit 1.0.0 is $3.99 USD (or the equivalent amount in other currencies
  • It is available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Health & Fitness category.

Stitch Fix #2: June 2014

Stitch Fix

My last Stitch Fix was pretty on point, my stylist nailed my style, but all the pieces didn’t fit right, or I had something similar in closet already.

I scheduled a second Fix for the begining of June, mostly because my 30th birthday is in the middle of the month and I wanted to see if I could find something special to wear for a pretty big day. When I wrote my review for my first fix I received an email from Kate at Stitch Fix, so I was super impressed with their customer service.

I made a note to the stylists that I wanted something fun for my 30th birthday, I love maxi dresses and skirts, I also requested no jeans. I wrote that I own a lot of pinks and blacks and while I love those colors I wanted to expand my wardrobe.

As soon as I opened my box and saw the Stitch Fix cards I was kind of disappointed. The stylist included a dress that was knee length. I noted on the first fix that it was too short for easy comfortable movement when chasing a toddler around. If it was dressy enough for a wedding I would consider it, but it was not flattering on the hips/stomach.

41Hawthorn Apollo Sleeveless Geo Print Sheath Dress – $68

41Hawthorn Apollo Sleeveless Geo Print Sheath Dress

I love the price point, but again the color is just another black dress in my closet, and the material felt a bit to heavy for the summer.

Kensie Jeans Johnny Skinny Jeans – $88

I didn’t even take a picture of these as they are very similar to the jeans that I received in my last fix, and the fit was the same, tight and not flattering. I am not against paying a decent amount of money for jeans,  but they better look great on me.

Papermoon Taylor V-Neck Graphic Print Tank – $48

Papermoon Taylor V-Neck Graphic Print Tank

I love the color and style of this tank, but I am not sure it is super flattering? Nick liked it, B liked it, what do you think? It probably doesn’t help that I am wearing a sports bra instead of a strapless. This isn’t something that I would pick out on my own, but now that I see it on, I do think it is a great style for my body.

41Hawthorn Bryan Short-Sleeve Open-Front Cardigan – $42

41Hawthorn Bryan Short-Sleeve Open-Front Cardigan

I do think that this is a cardigan that I would wear, probably because I have one very similar to this in my closet, just the sleeves are 3/4 length. I am definitely going to pass on this one. If It was a color other than black white and gray.

Market and Spruce Dicaprio Layered Mixed Material Knit Shirt – $54

IMG_8455

My stylist wrote that she included this because I like gray and pink. That was sort of frustrating since I specifically said I wanted to get out of that rut. That being said the shirt looks terrible on me. I love the color blocking, but the pink was flowy and the gray part was fitted. I felt like unless I was very slender this wouldn’t look great no matter my size, girls got curves. The price is also a bit high for a t-shirt.

I am going to give Stitch Fix (referral link) another try, because I think the potential is there. I am hoping that they will nail it for an awesome outfit for B’s 3rd birthday.

What do you think? Should I keep the green tank?

I am sure that you’ve read one of the million posts regarding marriage and age, and just like fitness and health there is no one size fits all situation. Two of the most popular posts that I’ve seen are Vanessa’s on what you should do instead of getting engaged at a young age and Emily’s on why she got married young.

While I think that Vanessa’s post has some very important, I think it is treating marriage at 23 as black & white. So this is my story, and my thoughts on young marriage.

#TBT College Kelly & Nick

#TBT College Kelly & Nick

Nick and I met in college through a mutual friend. I had gone through a serious of bad short-lived relationships, although now I am not sure I would even call them that. I wasn’t looking for a relationship, but I was happy to meet a new group of people (Nick and his roommates) and to develop more real friendships.

That spring, Nick and I were both still on campus and it was my sisters graduation, I invited him to come hang out with me for a bit, everyone assumed we were dating (we weren’t), we just were good friends. During the summer I was going through some stuff with my best friend and I needed some advice and someone to talk to, someone from the male perspective, and I called Nick.Things just sort of progressed. We started talking more and more and then we started seeing each other. Things just got serious very fast.

Fast forward back to school starting, it was Nick’s senior year and my junior year (we were the same age, I was a year behind due to transferring and losing a ton of credits). I had a lot of obligations for clubs on campus and my sorority, and in the fall it’s all kinds of crazy. We had a huge fight, and in my typical style I said it was over. We didn’t talk for months, it was difficult because we still had a lot of mutual friends. At a mutual friends birthday we ended up talking and for the next few months we just talked, we took things slow and ended up getting back together. That was scary for me, and a lot of our friends expressed their dissatisfaction about it.

That summer was the hardest, my best friend passed away and I was a mess. Not only did Nick move to Boston, so did 95% of my friends, only 3 of the core group of people I hung out with were actually in my graduating class. I was angry and sad all at the same time. I spent literally all my free time in Boston with Nick. We had talked about marriage and looked at rings, Nick had stood by me through one of the most difficult times in my life thus far. I knew that he was a keeper, but I also witnessed a ton of unhappy relationships in my family and how mean those people turned after divorce. I didn’t want to have any part in that.

Marriage to me is sacred, you honor it. Marriage is not always easy, it takes constant work. You need to communicate and spend time with each other, and to continue to give to that relationship like you did when you were dating. Divorce isn’t always the answer, I truly believe that people (old and young) don’t realize that marriage can be hard and that you go through shit that may make you want to walk away, but getting to the other side, that’s the beautiful part.

LP2 0287

We got engaged when I was still in school, I turned 24 two weeks before our wedding and Nick was still 23. Five and half years later here we are. In a much better place then when we started dating. I’ll be honest, we’ve had some rough times, we’ve been through some situations that really test your relationship. At the end of every day I am grateful, and Nick’s support through the miscarriage has made me even more aware how great of a partner I picked. I am grateful for the hard times, because we wouldn’t have been able to get through this without those times.

Did I miss the fact that I couldn’t just pick up and travel wherever I wanted or that I couldn’t blow all my time and money on a fad or something completely ridiculous? Absolutely not. We traveled a bunch, we spent our fair share of time roaming around Boston, finding cool bars and restaurants. If nothing else, I am grateful I got to experience all those things with my best friend and my partner.
