Reasons My Kid Is Crying: Review

This post was inspired by the novel Reasons My Kid Is Crying by Greg Pembroke who captures frustrating yet hilarious parenting moments through perfectly captioned photos of unhappy kids. Join From Left to Write on April 15 we discuss Reasons My Kid Is Crying. As a member, I received a copy of the book for review purposes.

April is kind of insane month for From Left to Write contributors, the original books for the month were just: The Idea of Him and The Opposite of Maybe, and I signed up for both. Then we got word that we’d also have the option to review Reasons My Kid Is Crying by Greg Pembroke and Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan, but that essentially means one review a week, and A LOT of reading, but I was up for the challenge.

Luckily, Reasons My Kid is Crying is more of a picture book. It is just as describe above, pictures of kids crying with hilarious captions, if you are a parent you’ve probably seen the website that started it all.

Parenting is full of ups and downs, but a lot of time I feel like you look back and laugh at a lot of the stuff that was ridiculous and silly, but you thought was so serious when it happened.

This book would make a great gift for a new parent or a veteran parent, or even if you want to buy it for yourself, it would make a great coffee table book…as long as the toddler hands don’t get to it. Or connect with Greg on Facebook and Twitter.

Do you have a funny crying photo or story about your child?

Confessions of a Mom, Vol. 10

Before we get to today’s post, I just want to say there has been too much loss in the past year, in the city of Boston and in my personal life. Many thoughts and prayers to the Boston Fire Department and to the families and friends of the two firefighters who lost their lives doing their job. Thank you to all first responders, everywhere, without you wouldn’t be safe.

Reasons Mommy Drinks

I received this book to review through my relationship with From Left to Write.

We know that I love the Mom humor. I like to be on the side of there is something funny (eventually) in most frustrating parenting situations.

When I was pregnant all I could find was picture perfect stories about pregnancy and technical stories, boring. Then I found this book: The Girlfriends’ Guide to Pregnancy. It was full of satirical humor and sarcasm and posting the honest truth about what happens when you are pregnant.

I was recently given the chance to read and review Reasons Mommy Drinks by Lyranda Martin Evans and Fiona Stevenson.

Reasons Mommy Drinks

This book is very similar to the pregnancy book. It has an anecdote for every stage in motherhood, starting with pregnancy and your baby shower and moves into stages like baby wearing, mom groups, and dealing with visitors. Along with every passage there is a drink to go along with it. For the pregnancy bits there are non-alcoholic drink, but we quickly move into the alcoholic ones.

One of my favorites? Nap Thyme. First of all the anecdote of how you have to get ALL THE THINGS done during nap time, spot on. The drink is also creative, and something I need to try, and soon. Since B has been on a nap strike for a month.

Nap Thyme

Lemon Juice
1 ounce gin
3 ounces club soda
Sprig of fresh thyme

Rim a glass with lemon juice and then sugar. Fill the glass with ice, pour in the gin, club soda, a splash of lemon juice, and sugar to taste. Stir gently. Garnish with thyme.

While I was reading this book, I was practically nodding along with every single story, saying to myself, that’s exactly how I felt! This book would make a great gift for any mom-to-be, new mom, or even if you’ve been a mom for a while, and since we don’t always have a ton of time to sit down and read, it is a book that is easy to put down and pick back up, and reads very quickly.

These hilarious ladies have a blog, but you can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

What is the one moment in parenthood where you look back and laugh, but at the time you were a mess?

For me? It was the time that B hid all his toys and then got very upset that he couldn’t find them. We both practically had a meltdown, and then I found them in our wine rack. One for you, one for me, thanks kid.

Little Miss Sunshine Award!

Recently, Caroline from the Trendy Trainer nominated me for a sunshine award. This award is given to those who inspire and bring ‘sunshine’ into their lives. I am grateful that she though of me, I love Caroline’s posts, check her out if you’ve never read her bog before. It also doesn’t hurt that she is a fellow Boston blogger.

1. Include award logo in a post or on your blog.
2. Link to the person who nominated you.
3. Answer 10 questions about yourself.
4. Nominate 10 bloggers to receive the award.

Here are the questions that Caroline posted for me.

1. What’s your favorite city in the world?

Hands down, Boston. If I had to pick one outside of my own, it would be San Francisco for the West Coast and Washington, DC for the East Coast.

2. Apples or oranges?

Apples all the way! I love the fall, and I love baking with apples. Can’t wait to go apple picking this year, probably very soon.

3. Bacon or sausage?

Sausage. I usually only eat these with a special breakfast, although I will say that I prefer the patties. With my new discovery of baked bacon that might be a front-runner.

4. Are you an early riser or a late to bed (er)?

A little bit of both. 90% of the time I go to bed early, but since I do have the flexibility to take a nap during the day, if I have something going on, I don’t mind going to bed late.

5. If you could only do ONE exercise for the rest of your life would it be mind/body
(yoga, Pilates) or cardio/strength based (spin, crossfit, etc.)?

I would definitely pick cardio/strength based. I have barely done any yoga or pilates ever so that was kind of easy.

6. Last movie you saw in theaters?

The newest Star Trek, I actually really liked it. Nerd alert.

7. Favorite part of your body you like to train?

Arms & Back. I’ve never felt strong in those areas and now that I do, I love training them.

8. Worst date you’ve ever been on?

Probably in early high school, I went on a date with a guy to the movies, he fell asleep, didn’t talk to me after and started dating one of my friends a few days later.

9. Would you rather attend a fancy cocktail party or backyard BBQ?

A fancy cocktail party. I spend a lot of my time in gym clothes and at the park or home and it is nice to get all dolled up every once in a while.

10. I’ll finish on an adventurous note. Bungee jump, skydive or swim with the Great Whites?

Probably, skydive. I would take a boat to go see great whites…I am kind of a baby.

Here are my sunshine picks!

My 10 Questions!

1. Favorite breakfast food?
2. Biggest guilty pleasure (tabloid magazines? reality tv?)
3. If you could only have 4 meals for the rest of your life what would they be?
